Schulstart Meets S‑Bahn Shutdown: What Changes Now for Vienna’s Public Transport

Vienna’s public transport system is entering a stress test just as schools reopen. From Monday, the S‑Bahn trunk line between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is closed for major construction works — a shutdown expected to last around 14 months, until October 2027. With tens of thousands of pupils, parents and teachers returning from summer break, the city is rolling out a wide package of reinforcements across U‑Bahn, tram and bus lines.

U‑Bahn: Four Lines Run More Frequently

To compensate for the missing S‑Bahn capacity, four underground lines are switching to tighter intervals:

U1 runs every 2 minutes 20 seconds during peak hours.
U2 arrives every 3 minutes 20 seconds.
U4 operates roughly every three minutes, with a maximum gap of 3:20.
U6 is set to a 2‑minute‑40‑second interval.

A reserve train will be on standby each morning to stabilise operations if disruptions occur.

Shuttle Bus Between Meidling and Längenfeldgasse

In southern Vienna, a new Shuttlebus connects Meidling and Längenfeldgasse, offering an alternative route for commuters who normally rely on the Stammstrecke. The concept was developed jointly by Wiener Linien, ÖBB and the Austrian Institute for Spatial Planning.

Trams: More Capacity and New Routes

Several tram lines receive upgrades:

Line O switches to long vehicles and a 5‑minute interval.
Line 62 runs every 7.5 minutes and gets a new route via Matzleinsdorfer Platz and Hauptbahnhof to Quartier Belvedere.
Line 18 undergoes the biggest change: a 3.1‑kilometre extension through the Prater to U2 Stadion, with seven new stops and a 6‑minute interval.

The extended 18er creates a new east‑west connection linking U1, U2, U3, U4, U6, S‑Bahn and long‑distance trains — a key alternative during the S‑Bahn closure.

Bus Network Around the Stadion Reorganised

The tram extension triggers a redesign of nearby bus routes:

77A now runs from Rennweg via Schlachthausgasse to Neu Marx.
80A operates more frequently between Praterstern and Schlachthausgasse.
78A is newly introduced between Lusthaus and Stadion.
The 18er takes over the former 77A section to Stadion.

Währing: Improvements for 40 and 41

Even outside the Stammstrecke corridor, changes take effect:

Line 40 runs every 7.5 minutes instead of 10, and every six minutes during the morning peak.
Line 41 operates every four to five minutes in peak times, and every six to 7.5 minutes during the day.

Inner City: New Routes for 2A and 3A

From 7 September:

Line 2A extends into the second district, connecting Karmelitermarkt and Augarten.
Line 3A takes over part of the old 2A route and now terminates at the Opera.
Line 57A is planned to reach the Opera from 2027.

Ring: “Parlament” Stop Renamed

The former Ring stop “Parlament” has not been served since July. Because nearby stations are heavily used and only about 200 metres away, “Ring, Volkstheater U” was renamed “Parlament, U Volkstheater” at the end of August to keep the landmark visible in the network.

What Commuters Need to Know

The Stammstrecke closure is not a short‑term disruption — it will shape Vienna’s transport routines until autumn 2027. Commuters are advised to check routes before travelling, expect fuller trains and trams, and make use of newly created alternatives.
